Well, IMHO, as long as we don’t give children acceptable outlets for their over abundance of energy. These diagnosis will continue.

Tell boys and girls not to fight while not giving them acceptable ways to do so (wrestling, martial arts, etc) the energy will be misdirected.

I’m not sure we are handling things correctly. At least, I don’t see it in a lot of mothers I know.

We have a habit of taking non-violence to the wrong extreme.

I get about 4 hours of sleep a night on a regular basis. I can operate on less without much of a problem for at least 48 hours. My brain never shuts off or stops moving unless I’m completely unconscious. I can run, walk, ski, climb, play, work and never run out of mental energy. Ever.

A prescription for some sort of “speed” is normally the best available solution for a problem which is chemical rather than environmental. Outlets for physical energy can help ADHD folks a lot but it’s the AD part rather than the H part that is being helped. Physical exertion helps cut down on the amount head chatter and distraction… basically it helps focus.

Adhd is a misdiagnosis of a common behavioral characteristic in children .
There are several reasons . First , there is no proper recess oulet for extra energy which children naturally have , which is exacerbated by diet consisting of sugars and chemical additives .Not to mention teachers who are not good at captivating the attention of students . And finally the drug companies who sell the “cures ” .

Do you know how the diagnoses are made?

Pediatricians often will prescribe it based on their own observations. At least that was the way it was when my son was young. at 2.5 years, I had a pediatrician tell me that when he started school, if I wanted Ritalin, he would prescribe it.

Hubby and I took the kid to a Teaching Hospital for a thorough exam. They focused on ADHD, Aspergers, and Anxiety Disorder. The final diagnosis was Anxiety disorder—which made a lot of sense because there are variations of it on both sides of the family (OCD, Paranoias —etc).

One counselor told us that there could be as many as 14 disorders that have the same symptoms as ADHD.

I’ve seen kids who are surrounded by adults who refuse to learn to talk properly to the child act out in ways that one might consider ADHD.

I also know children and adults who truly have ADHD and wouldn’t begrudge them their meds for anything.

Yes , having had a nephew and a son diagnosed .It’s basically a comparison to a standard for a particular age . The nephew at an early age of 2 , because he was not interacting the way “normal 2 yr olds ” , he wouldn’t acknowledge anyone who talked to him and my son at 3rd grade level because he wasn’t behaving as ” normal 3rd graders “, oblivious to lessons ,daydreaming all day ,and unresponsive to the teachers ..
In both cases medication was not given . The nephew at age 5 started speaking and acting ” normaly on his own , and becane a marine biologist , he was facinated by trains and fish as a child , that’s all that interested him and the only toys he would play with were those models .
My son the incorrigable student against my wishes was put in a special class which I visited and it turned out to be a chaotic madhouse . His big problem was …he hated school . Today he is a communications technician for one of the big phone companies making 90k a yr ..
My point is , kids do NOT develop at the same rate . Johnny may start talking at age 2 , while Bobby might not have anything to say until age 4 or 5 . Don’t get me wrong , there is a thing called autism and it does take several forms , however Teachers and Pediatricians are too quick to make such diagnosis .
